Kanye West signs Dbanj and Don Jazzy (MoHits) to his G.O.O.D Music Label

How It All Began
Just when music lovers and followers thought D’banj’s
Mr. Endowed remix featuring celebrated American
rapper, Snoop Dogg, with an accompanying video was
his magnum opus, it emerged soon that there is more
where that came from. And what better confirmation of
this than a seemingly innocuous tweet from certified
platinum rapper and 14-time Grammy awards winner,
Kanye West.
The tweet from West’s handle reads, “Yo @iamdbanj
and @donjazzymohits get back to NY (New York) asap
there is still work to be done.” To which Don Jazzy, a
compulsive twitterer quickly replied, “@kanyewest, yes
boss. See you soon.” Even D’banj who rarely uses the
twitter also replied in his characteristic playful manner,
“ooooooossssheee no worries boss. Coming soon.” At
the time of the exchange, the Mo’Hits crew was in Dubai
awaiting their connecting flight to New York.
It was midnight in Nigeria but twitter-holics did not
miss the exchange. Minutes later, the Nigerian timeline
was literally set on fire as the exchange of tweets
between West and the Mo ’Hits honchos aroused interest
and intense debate, re-tweeting and reposting.
The reason is not far-fetched. West is, perhaps, the only
celebrity twitter users who does not follow anybody but
has over 2.5 million followers. Also a passive twitterer,
the few times he tweets generate news interest. So
tweeting at Nigeria ’s own D’banj and Don Jazzy received
worldwide interest. But it was not just for the fun or a
publicity stunt as being speculated in some quarters.
West’s GOOD (acronym for Getting Out Our Dreams)
Music which is home to John Legend, Common, Mos Def,
Kid Cudi and Big Sean, among other artistes, indicated
interest in working with an artiste from Africa many
months ago. As the story goes, D’banj was brought to
West’s notice sometime last year when he featured
international model and dancer, Bianca Simmone, in his
video, Kimon.
Simmone is close to some of hip hop royalties and was
reportedly the link between D’banj and West. It was
during this time also, sources maintained, that the
Snoop collaboration was made possible. Though the
level of collaboration is still uncertain – because West
had reportedly insisted that he wanted only D’banj not
Mo’Hits – he must have been prevailed upon after due
pressures from Don Jazzy whose production credits are
nearing legend status.
The Good News
,Dbanj and Don Jazzy have been officially signed
to Kanye West ’s music label G.O.O.D (Getting Out Our
Dreams). D’Banj’s manager, Sunday Are of List
Entertainment, confirmed that there have been talks
between Mr. West and D’banj but that D’Banj officially
signed the contract today.
“Yes there have been discussions between the two
parties lately. They have been exchanging contracts
but now the wait is over, he said.
